"I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are basically good hearted."
-- ANNE FRANK
(writing in her diary shortly before the Nazis discovered her family's hiding place)

"Things here are just so much worse now. It's unbelievable!
People are being killed daily.
We just found out that three people from our area have been taken, tortured and hacked to death.
My friends think I should get out.
I'm not sure yet.
El Salvador is such a beautiful country!
Where else could you find roses blooming in December?"
-- JEAN DONOVAN
(American Catholic lay volunteer, a few months before she was murdered.)

No one knows -
No one CAN know
the bitter denials of limitations better than I do.
For three things I thank God every day of my life:
thanks that He has vouchsafed
me knowledge of His works;
deep thanks that He has set in my darkness the lamp of faith;
deep, deepest, thanks that I have another life to look forward to.
a life joyous with light and flowers and heavenly song!
- HELEN KELLER

A reporter, interviewing Marian Anderson, recalled some of the great moments in her career.
He mentioned the night Toscanini told her she possessed the finest voice of the century;
the private concert she gave at the White House for the Roosevelts and the king and queen of England;
the award she received as the person who had done the most for her home town of Philadelphia; and,
the legendary Easter Sunday afternoon concert at the Lincoln Memorial for a crowd of 75,000.
Then he asked her which of these had been the greatest moment of her career.
She replied, "The greatest moment of my LIFE was the day I went home and old my mama she wouldn't have to take in washing anymore."

In Him appeared life.
And that life was the light of the worldl
That light still shines
in the darkness and the darkness has never managed to put it out!
- JOHN 1

Light and peace to you on Christ's birthday!
